Value Delivered

This wastewater treatment plant had been retrofitted from steam boilers to hydronic, making their steam absorption chiller obsolete. To resolve this issue, EMCOR Services New York/New Jersey provided turnkey design-build of a new central chilled water plant including a new open-loop condenser water system. Our new cogeneration system helps provide free cooling via waste heat recovery.

Client Objectives

This client’s existing condenser water came from the plant’s effluent water process, which was highly inefficient. They needed a new open-loop condenser water system that would supplement their electric centrifugal system, help them increase efficiency, and capitalize on waste heat recovery.

Solutions

In conjunction with the addition of a 300-kW combined heat and power plant, we modernized the chilled water utility, and converted the condenser water from an effluent system to an open-loop cooling tower with pumping stations.

To combat the corrosive effect of the marine environment, we provided a high-density polyethylene plastic cooling tower with a 20-year warranty. We also installed:

  • One gas-fired absorption chiller
  • Two hot-water-fired absorption chillers
  • Condenser water pumping stations
  • Condenser water loop piping
  • Complete control system

Our comprehensive approach included robust project coordination and full system commissioning.
